A Ritual to Honour

Hattannah, Goddess of the Fire

Use a red or orange cloth on the altar and decorate it with tea lights, small volcanic rocks (basalt), sparklers, golden suns and red flowers. In the centre light a large red candle.

Cast a circle, being especially conscious of where your altar is in relation to the sun, to forests subject to bushfires, to hot dry deserts etc. In each direction invoke an aspect of Hattannah: her creativity in the sunrise, her passion in the summer sun, her molten energy in the earth's core, her powers of death and rebirth in the bushfire.

Play gentle background music while you sit quietly, feeling the throbbing life within the candle flame merging with the beating of your own heart, the pulsing of your blood.

Use a small red candle to bless each other (or yourself), with the words: 'May the Goddess of the fire bless you.' Blow out the candle, with a prayer of blessing and thanks to Hattannah.

Recite the Charge of the Goddess, adding the names of the Australian Goddesses: Hattannah, Aqualena, Althera and Areia.

Reflect on times and places in your own life when you have encountered the Goddess of the fire in Australia. Think about the feelings that fire invokes in you. Acknowledge that in these times and places you meet Hattannah, the Goddess of the fire. What was significant about the encounter? Think about how you can get to know Her more, how you can deepen your relationship with Her. Share some of these insights with others in the group.

Name the many ways that we meet Hattannah, with the invocation: Hattannah, Goddess of the fire I/we see you in ……' (Repeated by one person, with others completing the sentence, as many times as desired). When all the invocations have been said, offer thanks: Goddess of the fire I/we thank you'.

Pour glasses of red grape juice for all to share. Offer a prayer of thanks to Hattannah for the sun's energy which filled the grapes with rich sweetness.

Place tea lights in a bowl of sand. As you light each one, name what you have learned from the Goddess of fire, and thank Hattannah for all her gifts to you. When all the candles are alight, enter into the energy of the fire – via singing, chanting, drumming or dancing. Be conscious that the energy of your body is one with the energy of Hattannah, the Goddess of fire.

Make a commitment to work for Hattannah in some practical way e.g. to minimise further damage to the ozone layer, to use solar power wherever possible, to use more natural light in your home etc.

Open the circle, thanking Hattannah for her presence.
