A Ritual to Honour

Aqualena, Goddess of the Water

Use an aqua or turquoise cloth on the altar and decorate it with a picture of Aqualena, shells, pearls, sand, river pebbles and water plants. If you have photos of water places in Australia that are special to you, put these on the altar also. In the centre place a crystal bowl of fresh water, a small container of salt, and a stirrer.

Cast a circle, being especially conscious of where water is in relation to your altar – rivers, creeks, beach etc. In each direction invoke an aspect of Aqualena: her bounty in the rain, her power in the ocean, her interconnectedness in the tides of sea and moon, her stillness in the silent pool.

Play background music of water – waves on the beach, a waterfall or the sound of rain. Sit quietly for some time letting the waters of your body feel the movement of the water in the music.

Add salt to the water in the bowl, and stir it gently. Use this water to bless each other (or yourself), with the words: 'May the Goddess of the water bless you.' Pour the remaining water onto the earth, or onto a plant, with a prayer of blessing and thanks to Aqualena.

Recite the Charge of the Goddess, adding the names of the Australian Goddesses: Aqualena, Althera, Hattannah and Areia.

Reflect on times and places in your own life when you have encountered the Goddess of the water in Australia. Think about the feelings that your favourite water places invoke in you. Acknowledge that in these places you meet Aqualena, the Goddess of the water. What was significant about the encounter? Think about how you can get to know Her more, how you can deepen your relationship with Her. Share some of these insights with others in the group.

Name the many ways that we meet Aqualena, with the invocation: 'Aqualena, Goddess of the water I/we see you in ……' (Repeated by one person, with others completing the sentence, as many times as desired). When all the invocations have been said, offer thanks: 'Goddess of the water I/we thank you'.

Pour glasses of water for all to share. Offer a prayer of thanks to Aqualena for her gift of fresh drinking water.

Lay a flower on the altar as an offering to Aqualena in Australia's sacred water places – reminiscent of the offerings made to the Goddess at sacred wells throughout the world.

Make a commitment to work for Aqualena in some practical way e.g. to clean up her waterways, to minimise your use of precious water etc.

Open the circle, thanking Aqualena for her presence.
